Cleveland D. Faggard, Jr. (C.D.), 93, formerly of Kreole, MS and Moss Point, MS, and currently living in Grand Bay, AL, died Thursday, July 20, 2017, at Singing River Hospital, Pascagoula, MS. C. D. was born December 7, 1923, in Wade, MS, to Cleve and Ilah Faggard, and later moving to Kreole, MS in 1924. He loved shaking a person's hand and telling them he was C. D. Faggard from Kreole, MS. Even though he and his siblings grew up during hard times in a Paper Mill house, you would never know it by the wonderfully funny stories they would sit around and tell about their growing up years. He, his brothers, and sister had a remarkable unconditional love for one another that lasted throughout their lifetimes. C.D. attended Ed Mayo Elementary and Moss Point High School where he was a member of the track team. In 1942, he won both the high and low hurdles in the State Track Meet and the school won overall. He was also a member of the Moss Point football team playing halfback. In 1947, after serving in the United States Navy as an aviation mechanic at Pensacola NAS during World War II, he attended the University of Mississippi on the GI Bill. While there, he was an outstanding track member setting records in the high and low hurdles. He lettered three years in track. In 1950, he and his brother, J.D. played together on the Ole Miss baseball team. He also lettered that year as well. He was also a member of the M-Club while at Ole Miss. After graduating college in 1950, he taught and coached one year at Moss Point. In the Fall, he was Junior High head football coach and in the Spring was head baseball coach for Moss Point High School. It was while teaching at Moss Point, that he met his bride, Marjorie Simmons. They were married on December 27, 1951, in Bay Springs, MS. They had two children Denny, born in 1952, and Angela, born in 1956. C.D. played semi-pro baseball in North Mississippi during the late 1940s. In the early 1950s, he played fast pitch softball for Ingall's Shipbuilding, alongside his brothers, J.D. and Norris. The team went on to win the State Championship in 1953, and then moving on to the World Series in Oklahoma City, OK. In 1952 and 1953, he was recreation director for the City of Pascagoula. After leaving this position and briefly working for Ingalls Shipbuilding, Yankee Barhonovich helped him break into the insurance business as a salesman for American National. It suited him well considering his ability to never meet a stranger. Give him five minutes of "shaking someone's family tree" and he would show how they were "kinfolk somewhere down the line." His greatest passion, more than anything, was serving the Lord. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Moss Point, SBC where he served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and on various committees through the years. He went on numerous mission trips and had a heart for church planting helping form Cambridge Baptist Church in Gautier, MS, in the late 1970s. As a servant of the Lord, he had a tender heart for those with drug and alcohol addiction. In 1965, starting out with tents on the banks of Bluff Creek, he and his brother, Norris, assisted Bro. Bill Barton and others in founding the Home of Grace. Later, he and his brother donated the first trailer used to house residents. He continued throughout his life, until his health would not allow, counseling the residents of the Home of Grace making sure they knew God's love for them. He has a very special, lifelong friend, Walter Eklund, 94, and Gary Guessford who both carry on that passion for him now. There were many other faith-based ministries he was instrumental in including The Trucker's Ministry in Moss Point, The Seaman's Center, The Stevens Center, and the Jackson County Adult Detention Center. On October 1, 2013, C.D., Denny, and Walter Eklund were privileged to go on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. It was the year the government shut the parks down. When they got there, all the monuments were barricaded. The Senators and Representatives assisted the veterans to remove the barricades so that all veterans and their guardians could go in. To make it even more special, Gabe, his grandson, was able to meet them and surprise him. C.D. was so excited that, at the age of 90, walked the entire day without assistance. It was a famous day because there were news outlets from around the world covering the closure. C.D. was interviewed by the BBC News and the article is still online. They had a grand homecoming when arriving back in Gulfport, MS, complete with water cannons and military escort. The headlines read the next day, "Veterans Breakdown World War II Memorial Barricade." He is survived by his son, Denny Faggard and wife Bobbie of Grand Bay, AL, and daughter, Angela Faggard Cook of Moss Point, MS. He is also survived by four grandsons, Gabe Faggard and wife, Margot, Zack Faggard, Matthew Faggard, and Daniel Cook. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jimmie Harper of Bay Springs, MS He is also survived by his very dear cousin, Neva Dryden, childhood friend, Walter Eklund and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends who will mourn his passing. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Simmons Faggard; granddaughter, Jillian Dixon Faggard; his parents, Cleve and Ilah Faggard; brothers, J.D., Norris, and Lyman (Pokey) Faggard, and so painfully recently, his dear sister, Opal Outzen Goff. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 23, 2017 from 2:00 until 4:00pm at First Baptist Church of Moss Point, SBC. Funeral services will be at 4:00pm from the church with Rev. Michael Perry officiating. Interment will follow at Griffin Cemetery in Moss Point.
