Margaret Opal Barnes passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at the age of ninety-five. Margaret was born on September 13, 1928, in Carrolton, Alabama, one of twelve children born to Benjamin Franklin and Lillie Mae (Speed) Cummings. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers James, Olin, Richard, Ben, Marlin, Herman, Ronnie and sister Norma, her beloved husband, Burton Barnes, sons Thomas Wesley Goff and James Patrick Goff. She is survived by her sisters Linda, Mary, and brother Jerry; sons John Stuart (Terry) Goff of Mobile, David C. (Janice) Goff of Tuscaloosa, daughter Margaret Ann (Carlton) Martin of Moss Point, grandchildren Bridget, Joshua, Maryanna, Ingrid, Brent, Lindsey Morgan, Tommy, Machelle, Matthew, Daniel and fourteen great grandchildren.
Margaret spent most of her life in Moss Point, Mississippi raising her family. She was a devoted football fan who enjoyed watching the New Orleans Saints, but her biggest passion was cheering on the coaches and team members (most of whom she could name) of The Crimson Tide—Roll Tide!
While she did not play golf, she followed the difficulties of Tiger Woods and watched his career closely. She enjoyed reading history novels and playing basketball in her driveway.
Visitation for Margaret will be held on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, beginning at 10:00 am at Holder-Wells Funeral Home, located at 4007 Main Street, Moss Point, Mississippi with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Machpelah Cemetery in Pascagoula.
