Mary Lou Sanders, 92 passed away Saturday, September 30, 2023.
Mary Lou was born and raised in Jackson County and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a B.S. in Elementary Education.
After taking a school teaching position with the Escambia County School District in Pensacola, Florida, Mary Lou met the love of her life, Charles O. Sanders. They were married on September 5, 1959. Mr. Sanders was also a schoolteacher and later became a principal. Together they had two sons and enjoyed 19 years together until his death in 1978. After Mr. Sanders's death, she remained in Pensacola with her two sons. Mary Lou retired from the Escambia County School District in 1984 after 30 years of service. In 1987 she moved back to Jackson County, Mississippi to be near to her family.
Mary Lou was a wonderful and dedicated mother, friend, and teacher. She enjoyed traveling and working on any type of word puzzle. Several years ago, she started a bowling league for special needs children at Spanish Lanes in Gautier. She was a long-time member of Caswell Springs Methodist Church, in Wade, Mississippi, and First Methodist Church in Pensacola, Florida.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Owen, and Mildred Newman; siblings; Mildred Boutwell, and Andrew J. Newman.
Survivors include her sons; Scott Sanders, and David Sanders; sibling Emily Edmonds; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 6, 2023, from 2-3 p.m. at Caswell Springs Methodist Church. The funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. from the Caswell Springs Church sanctuary with Rev. Chad Bowen officiating. Interment will follow at Caswell Springs Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Scott Sanders, David Sanders, Drew Newman, Brandon Creel, Clint Simms, and Michael Foster.
