Melba Gean Tate (Barnes), 91, passed away on February 13, 2025, in Gautier, Mississippi. She was born on October 8, 1933, in Marietta, Mississippi, and lived a life filled with love, resilience, and an unwavering sense of humor.
Melba was a devoted member of Spanish Trail Baptist Church, where she found community and faith. Known for her beautiful spirit, candid nature, and sharp wit, she had a way of making those around her laugh while also offering unwavering love and support. Her stubborn determination was matched only by the depth of her care for those she held dear.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James "Jimmy" Barnes and Mary Elizabeth Underwood; her beloved husband, Billy Braden Tate; and her sons Raymond Leathers, Johnny Patterson, and Billy Braden Tate Jr. She also mourned the loss of her great-granddaughter Katrina Marie Braggs.
Melba leaves behind a large and loving family who will cherish her memory. She is survived by her siblings JM Barnes (Nan), Joyce Hester, Margie Daly (Joe), and James Edward "Sonny" Barnes. Her children Boyce Levain Leathers (Nancy), Juanita Morphis, Tommie Jean Braggs (Bill), Anthony "Tony" Patterson, and Billy "Bill" Tate III will forever hold her close in their hearts.
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Melissa Madison (Greg), Mary Johnson (Matt), James Edward "Bubba" Morphis, Jason Leathers, Amy Tyler (Thomas), Greg Young (Lindsey), Frankie Braggs (Danielle), Victoria Owens (Josh), Katrina Price (Mike), Corey Patterson (Traci), Cody Patterson, Lillian Nicole Patterson, Anthony Patterson, Braden Lane Tate, Bianca Tate; as well as extended grandchildren Angelique Griffin (Randy), Sonny Sexton (Valerie), Nathan Sexton (Lauren), and Traci Lamey-Willoughby (Josh). She was also blessed with 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to River Chase Village, where she resided for the past 5 years. The staff there became like family, providing love and support that will never be forgotten. We are also profoundly thankful to Notre Dame Hospice for their compassionate care and unwavering support during her final days.
A service to honor Melba's life will be held on February 18, 2025, at Spanish Trail Baptist Church in Gautier, Mississippi. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM followed by the service at 12:00 PM.
Melba's presence brought warmth and laughter to those around her. Though she is no longer with us in body, the memories she created will continue to bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
