Obituary

Meleta Louise Hand, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on April 14, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Her journey concluded as she departed this world while clasping her husband's hand, a testament to the bond they shared.
Preceded in death by her parents, Justin and Bernice Roper, her daughter, Kimberly Hand, and her brother Robert Roper, Meleta leaves behind a legacy of love and boundless selflessness.
She was born and raised in Jackson County, MS. She was fearless independent, and incredibly compassionate. Gifted in writing, singing, and piano playing, she generously shared her talents with others, spreading delight for years through her creative expression. She possessed a green thumb and nurtured exquisite plants, bringing beauty and vitality to her surroundings. She was a dedicated fan of the New Orleans Saints and cheered passionately for her team through every game and season.
She taught Sunday School and Children's Church for many years, sharing her faith and wisdom with generations of eager learners. Following the loss of her daughter, she embarked on a journey as a grief counselor, offering solace and support to others navigating the difficult path of bereavement.
Meleta's heart brimmed with peace and joy in the presence of her family, as she crafted moments destined to linger in their hearts forever. Sharing her unwavering faith and resilience, they formed a bond that radiated warmth and happiness, uplifting each other through every challenge they faced.
In her professional life, she served as a registered nurse, phlebotomist, and laboratory technician, tirelessly caring for others and making a difference in the lives of countless patients and colleagues. She retired from Keesler Air Force Base Medical Center, where she not only dedicated herself to her profession but also formed many strong and lasting friendships.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Walter Hand; son, Danny (Karen) Hand Sr; daughters, Georgie Hand, Angela (Lisa McCurdy) Hand, and Rebecca (Robert) Matranga. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren: Danny (Samantha) Hand Jr, Garey Hand, Karena Hand, Daniel (Miranda) Galary, Mikey Galary, Bishop Moore, and Janna (Fredrick) Scott. Also left to cherish her memory are her great-grandchildren: Chrislynn Hand, Athena Scott, Juliette Scott, and Hallie Jenkins. Her sister, Lee McCraw, and sister-in-law, Nell Roper, join the family in mourning her loss, along with a multitude of other family members and loved ones whose lives were touched by her kindness and compassion.
Throughout her life, Meleta touched the hearts of all who knew her with her unwavering love. A
memorial service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Canaan Assembly of God Church in Moss Point, Mississippi.
