Obituary

Samuel Edgar Crews went to be with Our Lord on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Sam was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi on December 8, 1942, to the late Artur C. and Sarah Wise Crews. He married Janet Clark Crews on December 21, 1968.
Sam served in combat duty for the US Army in Vietnam and was awarded 6 Air Medals for his heroic service with Troop D, 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry, 9th Infantry Division. He was a lifelong member of VFW Pascagoula, MS and IBEW 903 of Gulfport, MS.
An electrician by training and jack-of-all-trades by experience, Sam, with his mechanical mind, could accurately explain how to fix any problem. He was inventive with joking about current events and always had an old joke up his sleeve. With his wholehearted approach to life, Sam loved being a husband and father, spending time with friends working on race cars, farming, and helping others wherever he was needed. One of his most cherished accomplishments was building a barn and home with his wife Janet and daughters as a family in Helena, MS using timber from the property. Many years later, Sam became a paraplegic from a work-related injury in 1984 at age 42. Overcoming his disability with determination, Sam could often be found in that barn fixing things and doing woodwork in his wheelchair. Sam lived for a brief 4-year period in Vinton, Virginia where daughter Jill, his wife Janet, and in-home health aides and nurses assisted him with his increasing physical needs secondary to aging and paraplegia. To his last days Sam continued to participate in his own care, give accurate advice, and joke to make those around him laugh until Our Lord called him home.
Sam is preceded in death by father Artur C. "Buck" Crews, mother Sarah Wise Crews, and brother Kenneth Crews. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 55 years, Janet Crews; children Jill (Charles) Long, Jennifer (Jack) Davis; grandchildren Lauren Eddins, Blake Barksdale, Lana Barksdale, and Jaelyn Davis; step grandchildren Kimsey Long, Brett Davis, Lindsey Davis; a great grandchild Elijah Davis; brothers Larry (Pat) Crews, Gerald (Joyce) Crews, Richard (Beverly) Crews, Tommy Crews, and sister Faye (Cliff) Harrison. He will be remembered by many nieces, nephews, their extended families and a host of other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held at Clark's Chapel and Cemetery 10483 Old Avera Road, State Line, MS 39362 (Greene County) from 11am-2pm Saturday, January 27. Service will be officiated by Bro. Richard Crews and Bro. Stacy Douglas. Covered dish reception following service.
