Vera Casanova Newton lost her month-long battle with Covid-19 on December 27, 2020. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Vera moved to Vancleave Mississippi with her late husband, Robert Tillman Newton, Sr., where she remained until her death. Having been widowed in 1976 with four children ages 10 and under, Vera played the role of mother and father in a time when that wasn't common. Despite these struggles, she spent her days completely devoted to providing a loving and warm home for her children whom she treasured.
Best described as having a servant's heart, Vera truly spent her days serving her family and others. From preparing meals to creating grand weddings for those who couldn't afford to do so, no task was too much for what she was willing to take on. She loved holidays and family get-togethers and always jumped on the opportunity to invite someone into her home and family to enjoy a delicious meal.
When not serving others, Vera enjoyed playing cards, She had a standing Friday night card club for over 40 years with her three best friends, Cindy Holder, Rosa Hornke and Shirley Goss. She loved the game and her time spent with these lifelong friends.
Preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Louella Casanova of Metairie, LA, sister, Lorna Soulier of Pride, LA, bothers, Benjamin Casanova of Metairie, LA and James Casanova of Bogalusa, LA.
Vera is survived by her four children-Robert T. Newton, Jr., Benjamin D. Newton (Susan), Thomas D. Newton (Amy), and Melissa N. Rayborn (David) an her grandchildren Matthew Newton (Jessie), Tiffany Skoglund (Aaron), Tillman Newton, Jessica Newton, Michael Newton, Victoria Rayborn, Sarah Rayborn, Ashley Hart, Daniel Burke and Holly Lee (Ron); her (11) great grandchildren and her beloved cats, Hayleigh and Lady Girl (Little Bit).

"Mom, you have given so much and asked for so little in return. Thank you for always being there for us, for teaching us, listening to us, helping and forgiving us, loving us, and always, always paving the way for us. We will work hard to reach the standard you set. You are the epitome of love and devotion and truly the best mother anyone could have hoped for. To heaven you have gone but in our hearts you will remain forever."
