In Loving Memory of Wilburn "Pop" Cummins
Wilburn 'Pop' Cummins, aged 82, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025.
A Life of Service
Wilburn was born in Shaw, Mississippi, on June 29, 1943, to Edimon and Ida Mae Cummins. Wilburn's lifelong commitment to service began at age 17 when he joined the U.S. Army. Over six years of active duty, he served with distinction, including two tours in Vietnam. Following his time in the Army, he continued his military service as a member of the Mississippi National Guard. Transitioning to civilian life, Wilburn spent 20 years at Ingalls Shipbuilding. He took immense personal pride in his contributions there, particularly his specialized work on the critical repairs of the USS Cole.
A Joyful Spirit
Affectionately known as "Pop," he was a man who loved the simple things. He was an avid fan of both Ole Miss and the New Orleans Saints. In his spare time, he could be found fishing, tinkering with automobiles, watching car races, or delving into family history through genealogy with his brother, Douglas. Frugal, wise, and always ready with a joke, Pop's laughter was a staple at every family gathering.
Family and Legacy
Wilburn was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Sherman, Douglas, Hubert, and Rickey Cummins; his brother-in-law, Wildon Albert; his sister-in-law, Alice Cummins; and his great-niece, Pamela Mosley. He is survived by his sisters, Nettie Mae Albert and Freda (Paul) Overby, and his sister in-law, Glenda Cummins (wife of the late Rickey Cummins), along with a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends whom he loved deeply. Though he had no children of his own, he shared a deep, loving bond with his niece, Amanda Butler (Chris), who was like a daughter to him. He also took immense pride in his great niece, Abigail Butler, whose presence brought him great happiness.
Gratitude and Memorials
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at Lighthouse Memory Care and the Veterans Home at Tradition for the compassion, patience, and loving care that brought Wilburn comfort and dignity in his final years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in his honor to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
