Mr. Willie Lynn Presley Jr.

Dear friends and family, Our Daddy, Willie Lynn Presley, Jr., (W. L.) passed away yesterday morning just before sun rise. At 92, I can tell you his body was worn out from years of hard work and determination, but his sense of humor and spirit remained keen and fully engaged. Remember him that way! I think he may have been a curiosity for many who watched him come and go over the years. Appearances were not a priority for Dad. He made no effort to look the part of a modern day successful man, but was very current, knowledgeable and informed. He knew a lot of stuff, but wasn’t compelled to let anyone know unless asked, When asked, he had all the time in the world to share his knowledge and assistance. He did nothing in particular to attract attention to himself, but got a lot of it. He was interesting, but I can’t tell you exactly why. Maybe, it was because he knew stuff, lots of stuff that my generation just doesn’t know. Stuff like when to plant peas by the phase of the moon or when that last frost will pass, and more. He had a gift, an instinct, about people, especially children, and dogs. Children loved him. He loved to tease young children, both young boys and girls. Over the years, many young men looking into the right of passage crossed his path as they sought manhood; many stray dogs became Daddy’s loyal companions across the years, most notably, O’Dell. He seemed to know which would respond well to an investment of time and training. These young men, now men, and O’Dell, and all the rest, I believe, would tell you they learned things useful under Daddy’s training. Now, I know dogs can’t talk, but they can let you know what they are thinking and they always know who to bite. It was Daddy’s time, but we don’t like it a bit! Still, we must accept there is a season for all things under God’s blessings, especially today, the blessing of having been close to this quiet and steady man, our Daddy, our brother, our relative, our friend and our neighbor, for such a long, long time. We appreciate the outpouring of support for our family; we are humbled by it. Nothing about Dad would require all this attention, but I can tell you with absolute certainty, he would like it because it is coming from each of you. Join us, all of us, in our sadness and joy, in celebrating W. L. Presley, aka, “W. L.” and “Papaw”.
