Mrs. Cecelia Gladys Wieniewitz

Cecelia Gladys Landry Wieniewitz, 93, of Biloxi and formerly of Moss Point, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2015, at the Ocean Springs Hospital, Ocean Springs, MS. Mrs. Wieniewitz was born on October 5, 1921, in Jeanerette, Louisiana. She was the youngest daughter among ten children born to Gaston and Esperie Marie Hebert Landry. During her early years, she embraced the importance of faith, family and hard work. She was baptized at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Jeanerette, attended St. John Catholic Church in Biloxi, and was a long time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moss Point, MS. Rising early as a child and before school, Gladys went to work at Tallabue and Southern Shell factories picking shrimp. After marriage at age 16, she started a 50 year waitress career. Known for her quick wit, she worked at local coastal restaurants including Buena Vista, Cotita’s, Evangeline, Longfellow House, and Lafont Inn, modeling a stellar work ethic for her beloved children. Gladys and Captain Henry “Red” Wieniewitz were married in Biloxi on February 14, 1938. They were blessed with four daughters and three sons, and a host of precious grand, great and great-great grand children who affectionately called her Mamaw, Grandma, and Mawmaw. She delighted in her family and was a living example of all that she valued. She always loved attending Mass, holding babies, listening to Big Band music, making pralines, and most of all, being surrounded by her children. As a family matriarch, her last Wieniewitz Thanksgiving gathering in 2014 numbered over 100 family members. Mrs. Wieniewitz was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Henry; her parents, Gaston and Esperie Landry; a daughter, Charmaine Katherine Smith; a son-in-law, Anthony M. Dartez; a granddaughter, Tracie Hebert Eiserloh; six sisters, Lena Delotte, Phillomene Nick, Marjorie Hungerford Toups, Florence Broussard, Dorothy Roberts Hebert and Yvonne Hartman; three brothers, Lloyde, Herman, and Robert Landry. She is survived by her loving, devoted children Deanna(Charlie) Finnegan of Victoria, Texas; Jo Ann(Kenneth) Hebert of Gretna, LA; Karen Dartez (Jules ) Schubert of Metairie, LA; Henry John “Spud”(Nollene) Wieniewitz Biloxi; William Gaston “Skip” (Ellen ) Wieniewitz, Moss Point; David Wayne (LaNore) Wieniewitz of Pascagoula, MS; Son-in-law, J. D. “Johnny Smith, Moss Point; 20 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren and one on the way; 5 great-great grandchildren and another 2 on the way. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 11 a.m. a St. Joseph Catholic church, 4114 First Street, Moss Point, MS, preceded by a visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Lions Club International Sight First, Catholic Social Services, or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Holder-Wells Funeral Home in Moss Point, MS is in charge of the arrangements.
