Clyde H. Gunn Jr., MD, FACS

Clyde H. Gunn, Jr., MD, FACS, age 88, of Moss Point, MS, passed away Saturday, January 16, at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, MS. Visitation will be 12 pm to 2 pm, Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at Dantzler Memorial United Methodist Church in Moss Point where he was a member, followed by a memorial service at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. David Greer. He was born May 17. 1927 in Poplarville, MS, to Dr. Clyde H. Gunn and Willie May Williams Gunn. Because his father was a Methodist minister, Clyde Jr. spent most of his childhood living in various places in Mississippi, including Biloxi and Meridian, where he graduated in 1944. He studied one year at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, before training with the United States Navy for 18 months. Returning to Millsaps, he graduated with honors in 1948. Clyde entered medical school at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1952. Following an internship at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, he and his wife, Pattie, moved their family to Moss Point. Clyde and Wallace E. Calhoun, Jr., MD, formed a general medical practice, working together for ten years, both in Moss Point and at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula. In 1963, Clyde and his family returned to Atlanta so he could complete a general surgery residency at Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital, serving both facilities as Chief Resident in 1967. Subsequently, he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. Moving back to Mississippi in 1967, Clyde began practicing general surgery in Moss Point and at Singing River Hospital. In addition to his medical practice, he served on the Moss Point School Board, was Chief of Staff at the hospital, and was on the Board of Directors of First Federal Savings and Loan in Pascagoula for 41 years. In 1982, he enlisted for a two-year period in the United States Navy Reserve as a Captain assigned to the Naval Hospital in Pensacola, FL, serving periodically as Ship Surgeon aboard the USS America. In 1984, Clyde returned to his general surgery practice at Singing River Hospital and retired in 1988. He is preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Pattie Corban Gunn; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Clyde H. Gunn; and his brother, Jimmy Gunn. He is survived by his wife, Kathy C. Gunn, of Moss Point, MS; son, Clyde H. (Libby) Gunn, III of Ocean Springs, MS; daughters, Martha G. (George) Tittle of Las Vegas, NV, Leigh G. (Jim) Eley of Jackson, MS, Gene G. (Ron) Oswalt of Hollywood, SC; seven grandchildren, Lisa (Jim) Tittle Travis, Todd (Katrice) Tittle, Corban (Hoover) Gunn, Drew (Kristen) Gunn, Paul Gunn, John (Dargan) Eley, Caroline Eley; seven great-grandchildren, James Travis, Katherine Travis, Aubrey Tittle, Sullivan Tittle, Yvonne Gunn, William Gunn, and Luke Gunn. He is also survived by step-grandson, Bob (Kolie) Bates, and step-granddaughters, Christine Ingram and Genevieve Eley, as well as a large extended family. Contributions in memory of Clyde H.
