Mrs. Ernie Barriffe

Mrs. Ernie Nelson Barriffe, 80, of Ocean Springs, MS passed away on January 4, 2016 in Ocean Springs. Ernie was born on July 17, 1935 in Lucedale, MS. She grew up in Mississippi, but spent most of her life in New Orleans before retiring to Ocean Springs, MS. She loved spending time with her husband, daughter, and her extended family. Ernie graduated from Moss Point High School in 1954 and graduated from the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS (known as MUW). From there, she completed studies at the School for Medical Records Administration at the University Medical Center in Jackson. She worked as a Director of Medical Records Departments for many hospitals, helped start the medical records program at Southwestern University and taught for several years. She also helped develop shared medical records programs for various hospitals. She is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Eugene Barriffe; her parents, Butch and Lola Mae Nelson; her brothers Carl Nelson, Bub Nelson, and Reuben Nelson; her sister-in-law Madine Nelson; her nephews, Mike Nelson and Jimmy Nelson, and her two great nieces, Aria Lynn Owenby and Jessica Nelson. She is survived by her daughter Gena Barriffe (Andrew) Pieper of Ocean Springs, her nieces and nephews Lora Lee (Shannon) Melton of Orange Beach, Steve (Sharon) Nelson of Helena, Dwight Nelson of Helena, David (Rosa) Nelson of Agricola, Steve (Cindy) Nelson of Hurley, and her sister-in-law Barbara Nelson of Helena. She will also be sadly missed by her great nieces and nephews, Olivia, Samuel, Stephanie, Summer, Andrew and Alyssa, other relatives, and friends. Visitation will be Thursday January 7, 2016 from 10:00am to 11:00am at Holder-Wells Funeral Home in Moss Point, MS. The funeral service will begin at 11:00am from the funeral home chapel. Rev. Jimmy Holcomb will be officiating the funeral service. Burial will follow in Coleman cemetery in Hurley, MS. Serving as pallbearers will be her nephews.
