Herbert Houston Robinson

Dr. Herbert Houston Robinson, 85, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2008. He was born in Waynesboro, MS, on August 9, 1923, to the late Arthur Spurgeon and Nellie Mauldin Robinson. He was also preceded in death by his brothers William Benton Robinson (killed in France during WWII), and Alton Scott Robinson of Waynesboro. He graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1942 and entered the Navy where he served until 1946. It was then that Herbert began his studies at Mississippi College where he received his B.S. with special distinction. He then enrolled at the University of Mississippi which at the time had only a two-year medical program. Along with his emphasis in medicine, he chose to minor in foreign languages. This particular choice served him well when his mentor at Ole Miss recommended that he apply to The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine to further his studies. At the time a medical student must have completed two years of work in a foreign language to apply. It was at Johns Hopkins that he met his future wife, Betty Brice, of Baltimore, a Registered Nurse. They were married in Gulfport, MS, on December 3, 1956. After interning a year at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, he accepted a surgery residency lasting until 1958 in the Tulane Surgery Service which included Lallie Kemp Satellite Hospital and Greenwell Springs Tuberculosis Hospital, where he worked in pulmonary disease and chest surgery. Dr. and Mrs. Robinson moved to Pascagoula in 1958 where he opened his practice in general surgery. While his office was being built, he worked with Dr. Stover McIlwain on surgical cases which helped him to get to know the people of Pascagoula and surrounding areas. After several years, Dr. Dewey Lane joined the practice, and later, Dr. David Spencer became part of the group. He retired from medicine in 1988. During his years in Pascagoula, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of First Federal Savings and Loan. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pascagoula where he and his wife continue to attend after they moved to Mobile following the destruction of their home during Hurricane Katrina. His legacy lives on through the surgical practice he founded now known as South Mississippi Surgeons. Dr. Robinson is survived by his wife, Betty Brice Robinson; son, Timothy Scott Robinson, of Birmingham; daughter, Mimi Robinson Primeaux; grandchildren, Alexandra Marie and Jack Houston Primeaux, all of New Orleans. A visitation will be held Thursday, August 14th from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Holder-Wells Funeral Home in Moss Point. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 15th from First Baptist Church of Pascagoula with Rev. Dennis Ray Smith officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to service time. Entombment will be at Jackson County Memorial Park in Pascagoula. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made to The First Baptist Church of Pascagoula, The American Heart Association or The American Cancer Society.
