Mrs. Evelyn Ring

Evelyn Lucile Ring, 77, of Moss Point, MS passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016 in Mobile AL. Evelyn was born on March 17, 1939 in Dinuba, California to the late Rolla and Elva Crum. While still attending Reedley High School, Evelyn met Dennis Ring who was on leave from Castle Air Force Base. Because these young kids had no money for dates, their courtship was simple, as they regularly sat in the car and talked in the driveway of her parent’s home. Two weeks after Evelyn graduated from high school, she and Denny were married in her Aunt Dorothy’s backyard. They quickly settled in their first home, a converted chicken coop. Soon, Denny was called to war, and throughout the Korean Conflict, Evelyn raised her children with the help of her family and frequent encouragement from Denny’s letters. After the growing family was reunited, they settled in Madera, California, when Denny became a sheriff’s officer. Evelyn was a member of a tight group of wives who assisted when officers were injured, or other crises took place. Throughout the Sixties and early Seventies, Evelyn managed her family on a civil servant’s budget. During these lean times, entertainment was pinochle with their friends. Later Denny would fly them to sharpshooter competitions throughout the western U.S. Once the children were raised, Evelyn and Dennis enjoyed their freedom. They had a motor home, a boat and a Goldwing motorcycle that they used to tour Canada. Evelyn loved traveling, and she talked about their trips to Hawaii and Mexico for years to come. She also enjoyed hot air ballooning and cruising, snorkeling, belly dancing, line dancing, road trips and Kenny Rogers! Evelyn began painting later in life when, knowing he was ill, Denny gave her art lessons as a gift to set her on a new path. After Denny’s death in 1989, Evelyn made the move to Mississippi. She and her friend Barbara packed her belongings and headed down South. Despite overloading the U-Haul and breaking an axle, Evelyn made it and began her Coast life. The members of Dantzler UMC reached out to her and became her extended family, and Evelyn became ingrained in the community, assisting with Pelicans involved in oil spills, children’s art camps, and many community art activities. Evelyn belonged to the Red Hats, the Ocean Springs Art Association, Singing River Art Association, Pascagoula Senior Center, Camp Bluebird staff, Civitan, Sunday School, Circle, Super Singles, and Moss Point’s Club 57. Evelyn delighted in her friends, and belonged to the Class of ’57 both in California and in Moss Point. Evelyn had three children, eight grandchildren, and her twenty-first great grandchild will arrive in May. Her grandchildren called her Gram, Grandma, and MeeMaw, depending on what part of the country they lived in. She would visit the California and Ohio grandkids as often as she could, and her Mississippi grandkids enjoyed creating art with her and watching the “Price is Right” when they were home sick from school. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Henry Ring. She is survived by her children; Lisa (Charles) Burck of Moss Point, Lyle (Valentina) Ring of Stockton, CA, Loni (Connie) Ring of Van Wert, OH: eight grandchildren; Dr. Melynda (Christopher) Ross, Krystle (Anthony) Brown, Charles (Andi) Burck Jr., John Dennis (Amy) Ring, Cory (Alisha) Ring, Meagen Ring, Sarah Baker, and Nicole Diane (Kenny) Gibbs; twenty-one great-grandchildren; Avery Ross, Ezra Brown, Presley Ross, Griffin Brown, Jaysin Ring, Raidyn Young, Rylan Young, Rheis Young, Zander Young, Mason Ring, Carter Ring, Aiden Ring, Harper Ring, Alicia Deherrera, Jordan Baker, Jeramiah Baker, Benjamin Baker-Lucchesi, Josh Gibbs, Ashlee Gibbs, and Nicole Gibbs. The newest great-grandchild arrives in May. She will also be sadly missed by her brother Marvin Crum and her sister Mildred (Carsten) Jensen. Visitation with the family will be Sunday, September 25, 2016 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm at Dantzler Memorial United Methodist Church in Moss Point. Services are to follow at 3:00pm.
