John Peter "Jack" Godfrey

John Peter (Jack) Godfrey John Peter Godfrey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 26 at We Care Hospice in Moss Point. Born in New York City New York, August 15, 1932, to the late Francis and Mildred (Moates) Godfrey. Jack, as everyone called him, was a life long resident of Pascagoula MS. Joining the US Navy in June 1951 he served on the USS Boxer (CVA-21) in the Korean War as an Airman. After his discharge in May 1955 he married his wife Grace (Brister) Godfrey. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Grace (Brister) Godfrey, his sisters, Grace Smith of Pascagoula and Shirley Polifrone of Garrettsville, OH. Survivors include daughters Jacqueline Lentini, of Moss Point Mississippi, Pamela Cali of New Orleans Louisiana, Angela (Hank) Molenaar of Houston Texas and Tara (Daniel) Claffey of Hurley Mississippi. Sons John Godfrey Jr. Pascagoula Mississippi and Scott (Susan) Godfrey of Saint Augustine Florida. Brother Buddy (Carol Ann) Godfrey of Pascagoula Mississippi, sisters Ann (Peter) Fawcett of the Villages Florida, Sandra (Bobby) Usey of Gulfport Mississippi and Kathy (John) Simpson of Pascagoula Mississippi, 12 grandchildren, Blake Breaux, Baton Rouge, LA, Kasey Schoennagel, River Ridge, LA, Kelly Lentini, River Ridge, LA, Lauren Godfrey, Bamberg, Germany, Cassidy Cali, New Orleans, LA, Matthew Molenaar, Houston, TX, Johnson Godfrey, Saint Augustine, FL, Goerge Godfrey, Saint Augustine, FL, Joseph Claffey, Hurley, MS, Jack Claffey, Hurley, MS and Connor Claffey, Hurley, MS; and 1 great-grandchild, Emma Claire Schoennagel. After his service in the Korean War, he attended Mississippi State University where he received a Bachelor of Science in geology in 1959. The same year he started working at Ingalls Shipbuilding. He was employed at Ingalls for over 30 years as a Chemist. After his retirement at Ingalls he was certified as a Marine Chemist with the National Fire and Protection Agency as one of less than 100 certified Marine Chemist in the country. He worked in that capacity in the Maritime industry until 2009. Jack loved to coach baseball and soccer. He had a big influence over many young men in the Pascagoula Moss Point area during the 1970’s through the 1990’s. He loved to reminisce about his coaching days. Later he enjoyed coaching his grandchildren in Hurley Mississippi till 2013. He was also a lifelong avid fisherman who knew every bayou in Jackson county. John Peter (Jack) Godfrey was a simple man with a great appreciation for life. He loved people and they loved him back. He will truly be missed. The family would like to thank all the caregivers over the past 4 months, and all the people he called his friends. Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2017 from 10:00am until 12:00 noon at Holder-Wells Funeral Home in Moss Point. Funeral services will follow at 12:00pm from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Steve Cirlot officiating. Because of Mr. Godfrey's wishes to be cremated, there will be no graveside service.
